The 32 Most Famous Landmarks in the World

Stretching 277 miles, the Grand Canyon is one of the most breathtaking sights in the United States. At a mile deep, this landmark has been carved out by the Colorado River over millions of years. Visitors tend to opt for one of two main places to visit the canyon: the South Rim or the North Rim. The South Rim, around 230 miles from Phoenix, is the most popular part and open year-round, though conditions can get hazardous in winter. The more isolated North Rim is closer if you’re coming from Utah, but it is generally harder to get to as well as closed between mid-October and mid-May.

Take in gorgeous vistas at viewpoints like Mather Point, and try and catch a sunrise somewhere along the canyon. Hiking down into the canyon is an option, too: Day trips are possible on trails like South Kaibab, or you can embark on an overnight rim-to-rim adventure. Be sure to bring proper supplies and gear, as you’ll be out in the wilderness.
