But if you’re working on the go, traveling in a group, or attempting to preserve your phone’s battery, you might want to look into getting a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, which often provides more data to more devices. “Portable hotspots will use data just like cell phones do, and coverage will really depend on the carrier and the coverage they offer in the area,” Best Buy mobile supervisor Thomas Walker told Travel + Leisure. “Since hotspots require data, they also require a plan, something to remember as you consider buying a portable hotspot.”

Consider where and when you’ll use it

Not all portable Wi-Fi hotspots can be used everywhere. If yours is tied to a U.S.–based carrier (like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon), and you’re planning on going abroad, you need to make sure you’ve paid for a data plan that includes international use. If you’re only traveling for a short period of time, this might be the most convenient option.

But if you’re planning on traveling internationally for an extended period of time, you might want to opt for an unlocked portable Wi-Fi hotspot — that is, one that isn’t tied to a specific carrier. You can then buy a data plan from a company based in your destination, which usually is a more economical decision. “SIM cards are cheap and easy to get in lots of countries worldwide, and going this route ensures you get the strongest signal possible for the lowest price,” Peter Holslin, senior staff writer at internet comparison site HighSpeedInternet.com, told T+L.

The duration of your trip should also inform whether you want to purchase an as-you-go data plan (better for shorter tips) or a monthly one (better for longer trips).

Check with your phone carrier

“When you use a portable hotspot, you can choose the carrier it’s connected to. So if you want to maximize your coverage, you can use one carrier for your phone and a different carrier for the hotspot,” Walker said. It’s often cheaper to buy a Wi-Fi hotspot to hook up to a local network while traveling versus paying for an international phone plan with your current carrier as well.

Think about voltage and battery life

For the most part, portable Wi-Fi hotspots use a relatively low amounts of power (about five to seven volts, depending on the size and strength of the device). However, you should still utilize a power converter when plugging your hotspot in during international travels. Not all outlets around the world support the same power output, so using an adapter can prevent blowing a fuse or sparking your devices. If you want a more portable Wi-Fi hotspot that doesn’t need to be plugged in, be sure to check its expected battery life to know exactly how long you can use it on the go.

“One thing to consider is carriers may limit the hotspot data amount on your phone, so you may see slower speeds at a certain point,” Walker said. “You also don’t have to run your cell phone battery when you use a standalone hotspot.” On the other hand, portable Wi-Fi hotspots require their own data plans, which costs additional money.

Tokyo is also among the top 24 worldwide destinations among non-U.S. travelers this year, according to Airbnb data shared with CNBC.

Search traffic for Japan has more than tripled for trips during the first nine months of 2024 relative to the same period in 2023—a larger increase than any other nation, Airbnb said.

This year, Nat Geo has called out 20 awe-inspiring experiences around the globe to consider for 2024 travel.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, National Geographic editor-in-chief Nathan Lump said the “Best of the World” series showcases the “incredible diversity of what there is out there to do and see and experience.”

9. Dive with sharks in Western Australia

Australia is known for its vast wildlife population, including the 300 to 500 whale sharks that inhabit Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef.

The sharks gather in one of the largest congregations in the world between March and July, according to Nat Geo, allowing visitors to safely view them while giving them space.

12. Trek a glacier in Chile

Soak in the stunning panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and glacial waterways while exploring the tips of the Exploradores Glacier in Chile’s Laguna San Rafael National Park.

There are over 17,300 glaciers found along Patagonia’s ice covers, Nat Geo reported.

13. Step back in time in Menorca

With this adventure, you can feel as if you’re an archaeologist uncovering ancient ruins in Menorca – the archipelago’s “greatest repository of ancient architecture,” Nat Geo said.

From well-preserved village centers to foundational blocks from before the Roman Empire, these ancient sites are easy to visit and explore.

Some of the most striking features of Menorca are the navetas, which are megalithic tombs dating back to 1600 B.C., as well as the talayots, which are watchtowers built from mortarless blocks of limestone, according to Nat Geo.

14. Ride classic rails in Scotland

Explore the Scottish Highlands in style while aboard the Royal Scotsman.

Its interior reflects the surrounding landscape “through dark woods, wool tweeds and richly patterned bespoke tartans crafted by Scottish brand Araminta Campbell,” Nat Geo detailed.

Guests will have the opportunity to make stops along the coast to tour castles and sample whiskey at well-respected distilleries, or they may choose to take advantage of the onboard spa.

Experience dishes made by locals and try unique flavors, such as one of the region’s key ingredients called pla ra, a “fermented-fish seasoning that boosts umami flavor,” Nat Geo said.

16. Wander tea trails in Sri Lanka

The island nation of Sri Lanka is “one of the world’s top producers of tea leaves” after first being introduced to the bushes nearly 200 years ago by British colonists, Nat Geo reported.

Tea enthusiasts can hike along the Pekoe Trail and follow the tracks once walked by workers and horse-drawn carts that transported the tea leaves during the 19th century.

17. Go gallery hopping in São Paulo

When visiting Brazil’s largest city, São Paulo, Nat Geo suggests exploring the numerous exhibitions and street murals that make the city a “paradise” for art lovers.

“The crowning jewel is the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), which is expanding to showcase more of its 11,000-plus artworks, from pre-Renaissance paintings to contemporary sculptures,” according to Nat Geo.

18. Raft the rapids in West Virginia

Nicknamed the “Beast of the East,” the rapids in West Virginia are worth the whitewater rafting trip, said Nat Geo, but they are reportedly not for the faint of heart.

The New River is one of the oldest rivers on Earth, believed to be upwards of 360 million years old, according to the publication.

“The river falls 750 feet in only 50 miles between sandstone cliffs [before it] eventually merges with the Gauley River,” Nat Geo said.

19. Go antiquing in Hudson Valley

Antique collectors could find their oasis at the various flea markets and boutiques that sell a variety of rare finds throughout the Hudson Valley, New York, area.

Nat Geo noted that the region’s various antique inventory, including “colonial furniture and rare books [or] mid-century modern decor,” can be found at locations like Antique Warehouse in Hudson and Sister Salvage in Catskill.

20. Sleep on the water in British Columbia

Explore the western coast of Vancouver Island while floating on the serene waters at the Tofino Wilderness Resort, owned by the Ahousaht First Nation.

The “floating lodge” was renovated from timber that had fallen on-site at the resort, Nat Geo reported.

Dolly Parton has put Pigeon Forge on the National Geographic map. The music icon and her popular theme park have made the magazine’s annual Best of the World list.

The 2024 list released Jan. 30 includes exciting, meaningful, and one-of-a-kind travel experiences from around the world. The travel suggestions range from Paris and Niagara Falls to the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia and diving with sharks on Australia’s Coral Coast.

Parton and Dollywood made the cut because this year’s Best of the World edition goes beyond geographical locations. It also highlights hotels, restaurants, global travelers and travel products.

Dollywood is worth a trip to Pigeon Forge

National Geographic named Dolly Parton one of the travelers of the year because of her world travels and for bringing the world to Pigeon Forge through Dollywood and her resorts. HeartSong Lodge, Parton’s newest resort, was one of four hotels in North America included in the new “worth a trip” category.

“Well, we’re lucky to be in the part of the world that I believe is just absolutely the most perfect place that God has created, so we just look outside the window and those big, beautiful Smoky Mountains provide all the inspiration we could ever dream of finding,” Parton told the magazine.

National Geographic praised Parton for helping to make East Tennessee a popular vacation spot, helping kids explore the world through Imagination Library, her nonprofit that provides free books to children, and for her wildlife preservation efforts.

Dollywood partners with the American Eagle Foundation and features Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, the largest presentation of non-releasable bald eagles in North America.

National Geographic announced their list of top travel destinations in “Best of the World 2024.”

National Geographic’s team of experts and editors around the globe makes the list each year.

“National Geographic is synonymous with the best in travel, adventure and exploration, and now our editors are sharing the full breadth of their insight across a variety of categories with our fans all over the world,” said Courteney Monroe, president of National Geographic Content. “Whether through the pages of National Geographic magazine, @NatGeo on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, our Best of the World franchise has the power to ignite the explorer in everyone, from the professional traveler to the family looking for their next adventure.”

It’s not just locations that the “Best of the World” offers, it’s also including wellness retreats, hotels, cultural gems, and restaurants.

Their goal was to find things to do that were “worth building a trip around.”

FIRST ON FOX: National Geographic released its annual list of “Best of the World” travel destinations, this time with a twist.

The 2024 list arrived with a new addition. The “Worth A Trip” series features hotels, restaurants, cultural spots and wellness experiences around the globe.

Nathan Lump, National Geographic editor-in-chief, said the expansion of the “Best of the World” enhances the brand’s decade-long tradition.

“I have this real belief that sometimes you just need one great thing to get inspired to go somewhere,” he told Fox News Digital in an interview.

“The promise of a really incredible meal or a museum that’s going to knock your socks off … that was really the inspiration. Not full-on destinations, but very specific places and experiences that we think are really exciting and worth noting.”

Each selection was made by “tapping into” the knowledge of National Geographic’s global team of editors, photographers, videographers and other contributors, all of whom are on the lookout for new, trendy and exciting offerings for travelers at all times, Lump said.

Of the plethora of worldwide picks, 11 selections are found in the U.S.

Best hotels

Heart Song Lodge – Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Dolly Parton’s new lodge, located in Dollywood, has been designated one of Nat Geo’s best hotels.

The Smoky Mountain-based accommodation offers such amenities as in-room balconies and pink Jeep tours of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nat Geo reported.

Visitors also have access to free trolley rides from the hotel to Dollywood’s roller coasters and live music.

Hacienda at Armendaris – Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

New Mexico got a shoutout for its Hacienda at Armendaris Hotel, located at the Ted Turner Reserves in the Chihuahuan Desert of southwestern New Mexico.

The four-bedroom hacienda is set on the 360,000-acre Armendaris preserve, which is also home to conservation programs that help restore the populations of bighorn sheep, Bolson tortoises, aplomado falcon and other species, according to Nat Geo.

Under Canvas North Yellowstone-Paradise Valley – Livingston, Montana

Under Canvas is a “glamping” resort set in scenic Yellowstone National Park.

Montana’s Crazy and Absaroka Mountains surround the resort, which is set in a valley that touches 50 riverfront acres at Yellowstone’s less crowded north entrance.

“These tented accommodations are quite luxurious and very comfortable,” Lump told Fox News Digital. “So you’re not roughing it … [but it] really brings you close to nature.”

The Under Canvas tents can fit two to seven people, according to Nat Geo. Additional hiking and horseback riding outings in neighboring regions are available for booking.

Rosewood Kona Village – Big Island, Hawaii

Rosewood Kona Village is making a comeback after a 2011 tsunami devastated the original resort, Nat Geo reported.

“People were really quite devastated when the resort was destroyed because it was so popular. It was a beloved place where people had gone for generations,” Lump said.

During the restoration, the property was rebuilt on Big Island’s east coast, where families can learn to paddle outrigger canoes, make leis, watch movies under the stars and attend luau ceremonies.

Best cultural gems

Folger Shakespeare Library – Washington, D.C.

The world’s largest collection of “Shakespeareana” is officially reopening this year as a newly renovated and expanded museum and library.

The Folger, located on Capitol Hill, has more First Folios of William Shakespeare’s work than any other global destination, as well as an Elizabethan-style stage.

The library also features an interactive exhibit and a garden scattered with plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s works, such as rosemary and lavender.

National WWII Museum – New Orleans, Louisiana

The National WWII Museum in New Orleans has added its new Liberation Pavilion, which is focused on the “somber costs and global developments that were the result of the war,” according to Nat Geo.

The museum includes a recreation of Anne Frank’s secret annex in Amsterdam and a salt mine where treasured works of art hidden by the Nazis were uncovered.

Best wellness spots

Wellness might seem like a surprising addition to a list of this kind, Lump said, but the category is of great interest in today’s culture.

“Travel is a good way for people to open minds, open eyes and open hearts, and it’s also a great way to give back to yourself.”

“We all want to live better lives, live healthier and be more mindful, and travel is a really great way to think about that or experience something that might help you improve your life,” he said.

“I think that’s been a very important trend in consumer preferences and habits as well as the travel industry.”

Kosa Spa – Madison, Wisconsin

Kosa Spa, located in Madison’s historic Garver Feed Mill, offers its signature abhyanga full-body massage, which uses two bowls of “fragrant, warmed oil from Kosa’s own line of skin care products,” according to Nat Geo.

The spa serves post-treatment food and detoxifying tea as part of the 5,000-year-old Indian wellness tradition of Ayurveda.

QC NY Spa – Governors Island, New York City

Governors Island’s QC NY Spa offers relaxation right outside the concrete jungle.

The wellness center features indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and steam baths with views of the New York City skyline.

The day spa, carved out of 1930s Army barracks, according to Nat Geo, is accessible by ferry from Manhattan, since the island is car-free.

“I think it’s a wonderful, different kind of way to experience New York City and to bring a little bit of zen to your day in what can often be a busy and hectic place,” Lump said.

“It’s not necessarily the kind of thing people would always think of when they think of their trip to New York,” he added.

Best restaurants

“Food is such an incredible motivator,” said Lump. “And people do plan entire trips around getting a hard-to-get restaurant reservation, or a place they may have seen or heard about.”

Okta – Willamette Valley, Oregon

Okta is the newest restaurant by two-star Michelin chef Matthew Lightner, who opened the eatery inside the Tributary Hotel in historic downtown McMinnville.

The chef explores Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine country in his dishes, which feature locally foraged ingredients, regional fish and game, and produce grown on Okta’s 70-acre farm, Nat Geo noted.

Carriqui – San Antonio, Texas

Barbecue is in focus at San Antonio’s riverside Pearl District restaurant, Carriqui.

The restaurant has been built into an 1890s wooden saloon, which was rehabbed, expanded and moved 500 yards to serve South Texans their local cuisine.

The menu showcases Tex-Mex-style options, from cauliflower in mole sauce to kolaches filled with barbecue brisket.

Market 57 – New York City

Pier 57’s new food hall, Market 57, has been built inside a converted 1954 historic dock house on the west side of Manhattan.

The space features food from 15 minority- and women-owned vendors that embody the city’s “global food culture,” Nat Geo said, with one rotating chef or restaurant that swaps out every six months.

Pier 57 also has an expansive roof deck with a two-acre park and views overlooking the Hudson River.
